In honor of our 10-year anniversary, we are highlighting 10 remarkable Earthchildren from the past and present. Our Earthchild Spotlight number six is Dilshaad Julius who is 9 years old and in Grade 3 at Harmony Primary School in Lavender Hill. This young girl is truly a positive energy boost for everyone around her. Dilshaad entered the staff room at Harmony Primary with a confident, big smile and one can immediately sense how excited she is about yoga.

What is the role of Earthchild Project in your life? They care for the earth and keeping our earth clean. They remind children not to litter.

How has Earthchild Project affected who you are today? Before I started with the Earthchild Project, we didn’t have yoga in the class. Even if we did, my mama wouldn’t let me go because she would come fetch me early. But now, Earthchild Project has changed me because I’ve always been very stressed and now I’m a bit calm.

Have you passed on what you have learnt through Earthchild Project to your friends and family? Yes, I teach them to be kind, not to litter, and to keep the earth clean.

How have you been engaged in Earthchild Project? I’ve been doing yoga and I’ve been coming to all the Holiday Programmes.

What do you like best? The yoga.

What does yoga mean to you? Yoga is like…every time I do it, it keeps me calm and lets my stress go with all the bad stuff that happened during the day.

Do you have any favourite yoga poses? Ah [excited breath], the Eagle pose. That’s my favourite yoga pose [she said and showed it to me]. I also have a book of yoga poses that I do at home and my difficult one is the head pose. The one when you rest on your head.

Dilshaad has yoga once a week but according to Linci [our School’s Programme Coordinator in Lavender Hill], she always sneaks in to join other classes as well when she gets the chance. Dilshaad truly obtains plenty of passion and strength. We had a little photo session after the interview where she showed her aforementioned favourite pose, the Eagle. After this, she ran back to her friends and waved goodbye to me with a big smile. Children like you, Dilshaad, really bring hope for a brighter future.
