In honor of our 10-year anniversary, we are highlighting 10 remarkable Earthchildren from the past and present. Our Earthchild Spotlight number five is Lucian Engelbrecht who is 12 years old and in Grade 6 at Harmony Primary School in Lavender Hill. This young boy made me smile from the very first moment he stepped into the room where we conducted the interview. Lucian possesses such great energy and his humbleness and love for what he does shines through his whole being.
What is the role of Earthchild Project in your life? I come to every Holiday Programme. The Holiday Programme teaches me more about leadership and how to respect other people. I also do yoga.
How has Earthchild Project affected who you are today? Earthchild Project is almost like a disease, it comes on to you. It affected me quickly. I don’t know how to explain it but it brings me joy…I like it. Earthchild Project is like a part of my life now. I like yoga. It’s almost like Earthchild Project is in my blood.
Have you passed on what you have learnt through Earthchild Project to your friends and family? I told my friends about the Holiday Programme and some of them came and some of them had to go with their families for the holidays. Also, I teach family at home what Linci [ECP School’s Programme Coordinator] has taught me about how to make your muscles loose.
Do you have any favourite yoga poses? I like the dog pose, the up dog and the baby pose. Oh, and there is this other one as well, the cat pose.
How does yoga make you feel? It makes me feel calm. When I’m angry over something, Mrs. Linci says I must close my eyes and imagine myself in my own world and that makes me feel calm.
When we were done with the interview, Lucian gave me a shy smile. Little did I know that he’s a natural in front of the camera. Children and young leaders like Lucian truly inspire me to take greater action for a better world. So much confidence and joy in such a young child as Lucian is destined for greatness.
