On Sunday, our community gathered once again at Rooftop on Bree to celebrate the 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY) – a day filled with movement, stillness, generosity, and connection.
Hosted by Earthchild Project ambassador Joelle Sleebos, the annual event has become a much-loved tradition, bringing together yoga teachers, studios, brands, volunteers, and yogis from across Cape Town in support of a shared purpose: making yoga and mindfulness accessible to children growing up in under-resourced communities.
Since the United Nations declared 21 June as International Day of Yoga in 2014, the day has celebrated yoga’s ability to foster wellbeing, compassion, and unity across the world. At Earthchild Project, it has also become an opportunity for our community to come together in support of the thousands of children who participate in our weekly yoga programme.
This year’s event was a beautiful reflection of that spirit.
From sunrise until the final class, Rooftop on Bree was filled with breath, movement, laughter, and meaningful conversations. Yoga teachers generously volunteered their time, studios and wellness brands created a vibrant market and donated generously to Earthchild Project, and every person who attended contributed to a day built on kindness and collective action.
What makes International Day of Yoga so special is that it is truly created by the community, for the community. Every class taught, every raffle prize donated, every market stall, volunteer, and participant plays a part in creating something much bigger than a single day on the mat.
The generosity shown throughout the event will help us continue bringing yoga and mindfulness to thousands of children each week, equipping young people with lifelong tools for resilience, emotional regulation, confidence, and wellbeing.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Joelle for once again championing this special event, to Rooftop On Bree for their beautiful space, to every yoga teacher who volunteered their time and energy, to the many studios, brands, partners, and volunteers who made the day possible, and to everyone who attended in support of Earthchild Project.
This day reminded us that the Cape Town yoga community if filled with connection and compassion.
Thank you for helping us share the gift of yoga with the children who need it most. We can’t wait to gather again next year.
