On 18th of July 2023, the Earthchild Project team gathered with excitement to celebrate Mandela Day in a meaningful way. A day dedicated to service, unity, and making a positive impact, Mandela Day honors the legacy of Nelson Mandela, one of the world’s most revered leaders and advocates for social justice and equality.
Our team embarked on a heartwarming journey to The Village Home in Lavender Hill. This care facility is home to 20 residents, where 12 men and 8 women live full-time. The day began with the intention of nourishing both body and soul. Our team prepared a delicious chicken curry infused with fresh vegetables and took over the kitchen duties, allowing the dedicated staff members at The Village Home to take a well-deserved break and enjoy lunch with the residents.
With satisfied appetites, in true Earthchild Project style, we led the residents in song, filling the air with beautiful melodies that resonated with the spirit of unity. Guided by our board member, Deidre, a gentle chair yoga session brought tranquility and rejuvenation to the residents.
Creating moments of joy and relaxation was at the heart of the day’s activities. Our team indulged the residents with soothing hand massages, bringing smiles to their faces and filling the room with positive energy. As the afternoon unfolded, friendly games of dominoes and collaborative puzzles provided opportunities for residents and team members to bond. However, the most precious gift exchanged was that of warm and inspiring stories. The Earthchild Project team spent time connecting with both the incredible staff members and the residents, listening to their experiences and sharing their own. These heartfelt exchanges served as a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the significance of genuine human connections.
Before bidding farewell, we left residents with gift bags of essential toiletries, ensuring they had the necessary items for daily care. Additionally, we were fortunate to receive generous donations of knitted scarves and beanies, which we shared with the residents, keeping them warm during the colder months.
Mandela Day served as a powerful reminder of the profound impact of giving back and cultivating human connections. We are immensely grateful for the opportunity to give back to The Village Home on this special Mandela Day. We left feeling inspired to spread love, compassion and unity not only on this day, but every day.
Together, we can make a difference and create a world where every individual feels seen, valued, and supported. Let us continue to spread love and compassion, not just on this day but every day.
