We recently celebrated our 9th International Day of Yoga in Cape Town at Rooftop on Bree, hosted by Earthchild Project (ECP) ambassador, Joelle Sleebos, and it was an amazing experience!
Since 2014, the world has celebrated International Day of Yoga (IDY) on June 21, a date acknowledged by the United Nations. How divine is it that we have an official day to celebrate yoga? On this day, people around the globe unite to honour the gift of yoga, and this year, we brought together different yoga communities in Cape Town and surrounding areas to practise as one on Sunday 23 June.
Joelle says, “Yoga is a gift that has been passed down through generations, and it is our responsibility to share it with others. The International Day of Yoga is the perfect opportunity to do just that. It allows us to come together as a community and celebrate the many benefits that yoga has to offer.”
With that in mind, IDY is all about celebrating the gift of yoga, providing access to yoga for everybody, and raising funds for Earthchild Project. This year, through ticket sales, donations, and an exciting raffle with incredible prizes, enough money was raised to sponsor 81 little yogis with weekly yoga lessons for an entire year!
The event took place at our picturesque Rooftop on Bree which offers a 360° of Cape Town. The day was filled with various yoga classes and holistic practices, including Vinyasa, Yin, Kids Yoga hosted by ECP yogi and Programme Manager, Noks Jada, Sound Healing, and more. Attendees explored holistic brands at the Yoga Market, networked with people from the Cape Town yoga community, and supported ECP by participating in our raffle with prizes sponsored by incredible brands.
Yoga is for everyone, and it was heartwarming to see people of all experience levels come together. Whether they were seasoned yogis or complete beginners, everyone contributed to a day filled with peace, unity, and celebration. It was a beautiful day to practise, learn, and grow, all while supporting a great cause.
