On the shores of Cape Town last week, Earthchild Project witnessed two of our Eco Warrior facilitators, Athi and Liya, embark on an enlightening journey with the I am Water Ocean Guardians Workshop. This flagship program, spanning two full school days, aimed at cultivating a deep connection between the participants and the marine world through a blend of yoga-inspired activities, mindfulness sessions, and hands-on exploration of the ocean’s wonders.

Athi said, “It was my first time to swim and dive into the water – my first time to open my eyes in water. I’m scared of water, but I Am Water helped me to be brave and feel free in the water. To see the marine animals live was an incredible thing for me. I went so deep, deep, deep – close to the waves! It was amazing. I’m really, really grateful for the opportunity.”

The workshop’s agenda unfolded with beachside yoga, where participants engaged in stretching, breathwork, and mindfulness exercises. This set the tone for a holistic experience that combined physical well-being with environmental awareness. The marine ecosystems and the challenges they faced took center stage in the learning process, emphasising the delicate balance between human activities and the health of our oceans.

One of the workshop’s highlights was the snorkel station, a gateway for participants like Athi and Liya to plunge into the vibrant underwater world. This immersive experience allowed them to witness firsthand the diverse life thriving beneath the ocean’s surface. From the enchanting kelp forests to the elusive octopuses, small cat sharks, and a kaleidoscope of brightly colored urchins and anemones, Athi and Liya discovered the hidden treasures of the marine realm for the first time ever.

The workshops strategically took place at various Marine Protected Area beaches in Cape Town, underscoring the impact and significance of creating safe havens for marine life. Confidence in deeper waters, a better understanding of the ocean’s intricacies, and awe-inspiring encounters with marine life served as pivotal moments in Athi and Liya’s journey as Ocean Guardians.

Athi and Liya’s participation in the I am Water Ocean Guardians workshop not only expanded their knowledge of marine conservation but also instilled a sense of responsibility as stewards of the ocean. Through this transformative experience, they emerged as advocates for the preservation of our precious marine ecosystems. As Earthchild Project continues to nurture environmentally conscious individuals, joining forces with I Am Water reminded us all of the beauty and fragility of the world beneath the waves.

A huge thank you to the I Am Water Team for hosting these life-changing workshops for our youth at risk. You can read more about the Workshops and schedule on the I Am Water website.
