On 18th of July 2024, the Earthchild Project team gathered with excitement to celebrate Mandela Day in a meaningful way. A day dedicated to service, unity, and making a positive impact, Mandela Day honors the legacy of Nelson Mandela, one of the world’s most revered leaders and advocates for social justice and equality. Our team noted the day at Baphumelele Children’s Home in Khayelitsha, by giving back to 40 amazing women carers who are always giving of themselves and truly deserve to be spoiled and cared for.
Our day started early as the Earthchild Project team gathered to set up the big classroom and prepare four special stations for our guests. As the carers arrived, we welcomed them warmly with smiles and hugs, kicking things off with a lively welcome song.
We led the carers in a gentle yet invigorating yoga session, helping them relax and centre themselves. The women enjoyed a variety of activities designed for relaxation and wellbeing. They savoured mindful tea with herbal blends and refreshing fruit, expressed their creativity and reflected on what brings them joy at the art station, and learned valuable self-care tips at the wellness education station. Perhaps the highlight was the relaxation station, where they were treated to soothing neck, shoulder, and hand massages, allowing them to unwind and feel pampered.
We gathered together for a delicious lunch and some social time, creating a space for connection and shared stories. The carers had a chance to bond with each other and with the Earthchild Project team, cultivating a sense of community and support.
The smiles and laughter shared throughout the day were a testament to the positive impact of taking time to care for those who so often care for others.
A huge thank you to everyone who made this day possible, from the dedicated Earthchild Project team to the wonderful carers who joined us. Celebrating Mandela Day in this way reminded us all of the importance of giving back and the profound difference it can make in people’s lives.
