Qhama’s journey with Earthchild Project began in Grade 1.
Like many children in Khayelitsha, she grew up navigating an environment where peer pressure is a daily reality – pressure to fit in, to follow risky paths, and to make choices without guidance or support. But from an early age, Earthchild Project became a steady presence in her life.
She started with yoga, learning how to breathe, regulate her emotions, and connect with her body. As she grew older, she moved through programmes like Crown Sisters and Hiking Club, building confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging along the way.
Today, almost a decade later, Qhama is part of Earthchild Project’s Young Leaders Programme – a space designed to support adolescents as they step into their voices and begin shaping their futures.
In the Young Leaders Programme, mornings begin with meditation and reflection. Through guided conversations, vision boards, and goal-setting activities, young people are encouraged to think deeply about who they are and who they want to become. For Qhama, these moments have been transformative.
“We’re taught that our voice is important,” she says. “We find opportunities. We find a family. ECP feels like home.”
This sense of continuity matters. Long-term youth development isn’t about a single intervention – it’s about showing up consistently, year after year, as children grow through different stages of life. It’s about providing safe spaces where they are seen, heard, and supported as they navigate increasingly complex challenges.
For Qhama, Earthchild Project has been that constant. A place of guidance when peer pressure feels overwhelming. A place of encouragement when confidence wavers. A place where leadership is nurtured gently, over time.
Her story reflects the heart of the Young Leaders Programme: walking alongside young people as they grow, helping them build the inner tools they need to lead with confidence, clarity, and care.
💚 You can help make journeys like Qhama’s possible. By sponsoring a child through leadership training, you support the next generation of confident, values-driven leaders.
