If there is one way to truly feel the heart of what we do at Earthchild Project, it’s by being part of our annual family gathering.
This year’s gathering felt especially meaningful as we step into our 20th year of impact – a moment to pause, reflect, and honour the journey that has brought us here.
Set in the beautiful surrounds of Rocklands Health and Wellness Centre, there were dips in the natural pool, a delicious shared lunch, and space to simply be together. What made it truly special was the coming together of our wider Earthchild family – graduates, teachers, principals, ambassadors, board members, and team members, all connected through this work in different ways, across different years.
One of the most powerful moments of the day was when we traced a timeline of Earthchild Project’s journey over the past two decades. As people stepped forward to mark when they first became part of ECP, a living story began to take shape. One built on connection, growth, and shared purpose.
It was deeply moving to see those who joined in the very first year, 2007, standing alongside graduates who are now part of our full-time team. A reflection of what is possible when children are given the space to grow, to believe in themselves, and to step into their potential.
Later, we gathered under the shade of a large tree for a facilitated storytelling session. Here, we listened – really listened – to memories that have shaped the Earthchild Project journey. One that stayed with us was shared by a graduate:
“I remember when Sis Noks used to tell us that in Khayelitsha we are behind closed gates, but Earthchild will help us to get out of those gates.”
It was a look into the deeper purpose of this work. Not just what we do from day to day, but what it makes possible.
The day held a softness to it. An authenticity. A sense of grounding in what matters most. We are deeply grateful for this community. Our family that continues to grow alongside our impact and reach.
